REMINDER: Swimming

IMPORTANT REMINDER: SWIMMING!!!   April 1-4

Starting the Monday we get back from Spring Break our class will be going to swimming lessons.

Please do not forget to pack an extra swim bag with the following: swim suit, towel, goggles (if necessary), a small snack, water bottle and extra undies (yes I can't tell you how many times we've seen underwear stay on under the bathing suit only to catch it too late).

Thank you to the parents who can volunteer. We could still use a few more.
If you have any questions please email me, I will be checking my email before Spring Break ends.

Happy first day of Spring!!!

I think students, teachers and parents are all happy to be enjoying some nicer weather this last week. Hopefully the sun decides to stick around and give us a few nice days during Spring Break.

Here is what we have been up to in Grade 3.

Science: Soil
Students wrote down one thing about soil they think is true. Students researched 4 questions about soil online. Students are playing a game in class we call "Soil or Soiled." The purpose of the game is to use their research and knowledge about soil to determine whether their initial "facts" are indeed, fact or fiction.

Math: Subtraction and Fractions
We have been introducing fractions by looking for them in our classroom. For instance when we split a page in half or quarters, or when we make groups.

Subtraction: We have learned 5 different strategies for subtraction: Try them out at home.

Language Arts: Paragraphs
We re beginning to develop paragraph writing. We know:
- paragraphs are made up of multiple sentences about the same topic.
- the first sentence in a paragraph is indented (a few spaces in from the red line)
- paragraphs begin with a introduction/topic sentence that introduces the topic of the entire paragraph

Thursday March 21 is a half day. Noon dismissal.
Have a great Spring Break!!!

March 13

Outside Fun
Students and teachers were very happy to see temperatures that allowed for outdoor recesStudents were definitely excited to play in the snow.

Math
We have been practicing three digit subtraction. So far we have learned three different methods for subtraction: using base ten blocks, standard subtraction equation and add up. We have discussed how the top number (or greater number) is always what you have an the bottom number (lesser number) is what you have to give away. As always place value is very important. Try a couple of questions at home.
ABCYa.com is a great resource for practicing subtraction.

Inline Skating
Students have been amazing during inline skating with Alien Inline. Sean our instructor has been really impressed with our class' great listening, enthusiasm and growth over the few classes. Way to go class!
