BOARD GAMES

Parents and Students,

Tomorrow, Friday December 21,  we will be spending some time playing board games together in our class with our friends. I am asking the students to bring a board game from home that they could easily teach to a friend.
Some ideas for games are: Sorry, Hop 'n Pop, Checkers,
Chess, Monopoly, Trouble, Chinese Checkers, Snakes and Ladders, etc.

Please send the board game in a bag with your child and they will bring it home at the end of the day.

Today we wrote emails to our armed forces troops serving around the world. Many of our students wanted to show you what they wrote. You can follow the link below and help them find their letter.

Dec. 13

Math:
Greater Than and Less Than
We have been busy making equations and learning the correct symbol to use. The symbol is like a crocodile mouth and it always wants to eat the greater number.
Number Order
we have been working on putting numbers in order from least to greatest.
We also went on IXL Math to work on Greater than and Lesser Than problems.

Language Arts:
We have been  learning how to write letters. This week we have created a letter for another person in our classroom. After reading our letter, each student wrote a letter in reply. We are learning to write a proper letter so that next week, we can write letters to members of the Canadian military who spend their holidays overseas.

Novel:
We have been reading Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" by candlelight. We are learning the importance of being kind and generous to those around us.

Art:
This week we made Christmas cards for seniors living in retirement homes in our community. Today members of the Grade 3/4 choir delivered these cards and performed songs for the residents. We have also made decorations for our classroom and gym.

Creative Movement:
We have been preparing for our performance next Tuesday. Our assembly starts at 1:30pm. All are welcome to attend.

Open Minds Seed School:
I met with our liaison from the Mustard Seed and we are beginning plans for our week spent at Seed School. We will be going to Seed School from February 4-8. While it may seem like its still aways away, by the time we return from Winter Break it will be only a few weeks from starting. We are still in need of parent volunteers. The Mustard Seed requires one adult for every 5 students. This means we would need 4 parents each day (at the least). As this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for students and parents, I would be happy with even more.
Please consider volunteering.  If childcare is an issue perhaps see if you could swap children with another parent in our class and then maybe each of you go a day. If you work downtown, see if you are available for an afternoon, and come explore downtown with us.
Please email me if you have questions or are available to volunteer for an afternoon, one day or multiple days.  My email is rwstraiton@cbe.ab.ca

Testing Beams:

Question: What beam do you think can hold the most weight, a rectangular beam, and accordian beam or a girder beam?

Materials: paper, tape, blocks

Observations: see pics

Conclusion: Our conclusions varied because of how well we were able to build our beams.
- All of us discovered that a rectangular beam holds the least blocks before collapsing.
- Our accordion beams were pretty strong because the triangle shape is strong. Like an arch it is able to spread the weight down the sides of the triangle.
- The girder beams were light and strong. They held a lot of weight as well and in the class experiment it held the most.

Art:
We are creating a holiday car for Art. We are learning techniques such as mirroring, and using oiln pastels. In the days ahead we will be learning water colour painting techniques. Have a look at our progress so far.

Important Information

  • Calgary Food Bank: We are encouraging families that are able to contribute to donate a non-perishable food item for families in need in our city. We are collecting food until Thursday Dec. 6. We are learning about our ripple effect. One way we can each make a ripple is to donate time, money or goods and energy to the needs of other people. I have encouraged students to talk with their parents about how they can make a ripple.
  • Fun Lunch this Thursday.
  • No School Friday December 6.
  • Popcorn Days next Tuesday and Wednesday: December 11 and 12.
