Math

We are learning some mental math strategies that help with addition. One of these is making 10's or making numbers 1 or 2 more or less than 10. Student looked at how the numbers to make 10 make a pattern.
Tell your parents the patterns you see
1+9
2+8
3+7
4+6
5+5
6+4
7+3
8+2
9+1

This week we introduced a dice game that helps us with number sense, number order and three digit addition. Here are the rules.
Player 1
Roll 3 dice
Make the largest number you can using the three dice write it down

Player 2
Roll 3 Dice
Make the largest number you can using the three dice write it down

Both players repeat once more.
Add the two totals together. Don't forget to regroup if necessary.

Have a look at what it looks like.

The highest score wins the round. You can also play trying to get the lowest score.

If you do not have dice at home click the link to use virtual online dice: virtual dice

This Week

We have a busy few days of school this week.
Here are some things to remember for this week:

Popcorn Days:
Tuesday and Wednesday
Bring a twoonie for popcorn.

Valentines Day:

On Wednesday, we will be celebrating Valentines Day. Students are welcome to bring valentines for their friends and classmates. We will have an opportunity to pass them out in the afternoon. I have one rule regarding valentines. That rule is if you want to bring valentines cards for your classmates you must bring one for each student in our class. If you only bring cards for some, you will not be able to hand them out.

We have 21 students in our class. The class list is:
Anatol
Tristan
Cassie
Emma
J.C.
Grayson
Molly
Isabelle
Quinn
Zain
Kiyon
Gabriel
Emily
Nadia
Oneza
Ethan
Ferdows
Nytesh
Farand
Victoria
Heeva

Unbirthday Party:

At Ken Taylor School, we will celebrate an “Unbirthday”. This idea comes from Alice in Wonderland.  Not all students have the chance to celebrate their birthday during the school year and therefore, we have decided to celebrate EVERYONE’s birthday together! Along with our Valentines Day celebrations we will be having our unbirthday party on Wednesday afternoon. You are invited to send an extra special treat with your child that they can save for the afternoon celebration. You may want to write a note, or at least discuss with your child to hold off from eating their special treat until the afternoon.

Reminder:
Teacher's Convention: February 14 and 15: No Classes
Family Day: Monday February 18: School Closed

Day 5- Seed School

What a great week we had at Seed School.
We want to thank all of the parents who volunteered for making this week possible. We could't have gone without your willingness to participate in Seed School.
I also wanted to thank all of our Grade 3's for being such great ambassadors for our school and community. I am very proud of how you were responsible, open minded, flexible and kind.

Our last day was a whirlwind. We learned about some of the buildings, +15's and public art around the city.
Highlights:
- Brookfield Place: Bow Glacier/City Traffic Art "Herald/Harbinger"
- +15's
- revolving doors
- views of downtown
- Bow Tower
- "Wonderland"  head sculpture outside Bow Tower

Day 4- Seed School

We had another busy day at Seed School. This morning we discussed what a great opportunity we have to go to Seed School and how we can share a part of our experiences by going on this blog and using some of the pictures and information to discuss what we are doing, what we are seeing, what we are experiencing and how we can make a difference.

I encourage you to take some time together and discuss what your child has experienced this week at the Mustard Seed.

Highlights:
- sharing our favourite part of Wednesday
- meeting Keely, a resident of the Mustard Seed
- journalling about Keely's life story
- Finding defensive architecture/design
- exploring the +15's in the city
- checking out City Hall

There are lots of pictures: Enjoy!
