Dec 4

Testing Beams:

Question: What beam do you think can hold the most weight, a rectangular beam, and accordian beam or a girder beam?

Materials: paper, tape, blocks

Observations: see pics

Conclusion: Our conclusions varied because of how well we were able to build our beams.
- All of us discovered that a rectangular beam holds the least blocks before collapsing.
- Our accordion beams were pretty strong because the triangle shape is strong. Like an arch it is able to spread the weight down the sides of the triangle.
- The girder beams were light and strong. They held a lot of weight as well and in the class experiment it held the most.

Art:
We are creating a holiday car for Art. We are learning techniques such as mirroring, and using oiln pastels. In the days ahead we will be learning water colour painting techniques. Have a look at our progress so far.

Important Information

  • Calgary Food Bank: We are encouraging families that are able to contribute to donate a non-perishable food item for families in need in our city. We are collecting food until Thursday Dec. 6. We are learning about our ripple effect. One way we can each make a ripple is to donate time, money or goods and energy to the needs of other people. I have encouraged students to talk with their parents about how they can make a ripple.
  • Fun Lunch this Thursday.
  • No School Friday December 6.
  • Popcorn Days next Tuesday and Wednesday: December 11 and 12.
  • Winter Celebration Week: Students are welcome to dress up to celebrate each days theme. Our class will be performing on Tuesday December 18 @ 1:30pm.
