Despite our bus picking us up quite late this morning, today was full of eye opening experiences and inspiring stories from staff sharing the ripple effect Calgarians have on some of our cities most vulnerable.
Highlights:
- tour of Inn From The Cold: a family shelter
- brainstorming ways that we can get involved and how we can make a positive ripple effect
- conversation with Shirley about how the Mustard Seed raises money
- Stairway Graffiti: Journal activity Think, See, Wonder, Feel
Our tour of Inn From the cold was especially moving. This is a shelter that helps families in need, who lack a shelter, and need support finding a place to live. Out of respect I did not feel comfortable taking pictures of the "cubicles" families live in (for sometimes months). I encourage you to discuss this experience with your child and ask them about the living arrangements for these families.
We also discussed ways we can get involved and help. There are so many ways the Mustard Seed and Inn From The Cold can use our help.
If you want to get involved I invite you to go to their websites. I will post a link below the photos.
Here are some ways you could get involved:
- Volunteer your time
- Donate items: Some high need items are diapers, and gently used footwear for children, and men and women
- Donate Money: $3.51 provides a hot meal for someone living on the street
Tomorrow: With the weather warming up tomorrow (a balmy -12) it may allow for some short outdoor exploration in the city. We would not spend a long time outside, mostly walking. But if you feel your son or daughter would be more comfortable with snow pants, feel free to send them with them.
There is a family activity the Mustard Seed is hosting called Walk With Us:
