January 10

Happy New Year

I hope you had a wonderful time over the winter break. Your children seemed rested and ready for school to begin on Monday.

We have jumped right into our learning this week.

Language Arts
We continue to focus on writing. Over the next few weeks we will be focussing on including more details into our writing. This incorporates including the 5 W's (who? what? where? when? why? how?), as well as using our senses (touch, sight, hearing, taste, smell) to guide descriptive vocabulary.

While reading, students have been looking for adjectives, and identifying synonyms for such words. These can easily be done at home with library books or home reading.

Health
With the unseasonably mild weather, it can be easy to forget to wear everything needed for cold weather. This week we reviewed proper attire for the cold. This is important, as we go out everyday if it is nicer than -20 degrees celsius. This will also be very important for when we go to Seed School in February. We will be walking outside, and we will be doing activities outside. I would encourage families to discuss what students need to stay warm when the thermometer drops to frigid temperatures.

Math
We continue to build our number sense by looking at math problems and using strategies to solve them. We will be reintroducing addition and subtraction, and will be introducing multiplication and division.

Social Studies
As we prepare for Seed School at the Mustard Seed, students are using what we have learned about our rights and needs, and apply it to what we know about homelessness. We brainstormed what we know, see, feel, smell, think about people who live on the streets. We sketched what we thought one looked like, and have started writing a poem about our art work.

Gym
Check out our skipping skills

Science
The students have been introduced to rocks and minerals. We have been using our senses and other adjectives to describe what we observe. Keep an eye out for an interesting rock your child can bring in and investigate closer.
